Students in this online course explore the people, places, and practices that link nature with revitalizing neighborhoods. Civic Ecology practices – such as community gardening, restoring streams, planting trees, and removing invasive species to restore native habitat – help communities rebuild places damaged by disaster, pollution, environmental degradation, and ethnic conflict or war. Civic ecology is the study of the individual, community, and environmental benefits of these local environmental stewardship practices, as well as their implications for sustainability. Students in this interdisciplinary course learn about contemporary scholarship in social-ecological systems; resilience; and nature and human and community well-being to build a sustainable society. They also contribute to a local civic ecology practice through the course service learning project.

This course examines the history and future of the ecological city and the technological and social forces that continue to shape it. Metropolitan transformation is explored in conjunction with alternative transportation, renewable energy, green infrastructure, recycling and resource management, and sustainable economics as means toward advancing cities to become the basis of an ecologically sound and socially just society. The first part of the course introduces students to the long, but often overlooked, history of environmental city development in the western planning tradition. The second part of the course reviews present-day efforts to apply these approaches in the face of modern metropolitan challenges to creating ecologically responsible cities. Specific case studies are studied within the theoretical context and political struggles that frame them.

In this course, students will review basic climate change science, impacts, communication strategies, and actions. After discussion with classmates, students will choose a climate action from the Drawdown (www.drawdown.org) list of 100 climate solutions that they can implement and invite others to implement. Finally, students will estimate the impact of their climate action on mitigating greenhouse gas. Students will participate in weekly discussions through Canvas, Zoom webinars, and will create a digital portfolio to aid in reporting and reflecting on their climate action efforts. This online course will engage students in critically assessing the potential effectiveness of a broad spectrum of actions and policies to limit and adapt to climate change.
